I live in a split level home in Alaska. I have a hard time holding heat in the down stairs living room and bedrooms. I had a friend suggest quilted curtains. When I saw the cost of the premade quilted curtains I knew this would be another item to add to my home project list. I am happy to say that today is the day that I finally have time and a coupon to complete this project on a budget. So to JoAnn Fabrics I went with 40% off a single item coupon in hand. I got prequilted fabric for $5.40 a yard, I needed two yards for my window. I also needed thread and a curtain rod. I spent about $21.00 for all the supplies. This is less than what I would of paid for one curtain quilted curtain panel, and I never did find the right size for my window, so I would have had to hem the purchased ones anyhow. I got my fabric from JoAnn Fabrics, but I have seen the prequilted fabric at several Wal-marts that still carry fabric, I am sure you can find it at most well stocked fabric stores for pretty inexpensive. What I learned was to use the pattern of the quilting to guide my cuts and my seams. I did not use a single pin or measuring tape. I held up the fabric to the window and folded the edge to where it needed to be sewn and used the pattern in the fabric to guide where the seam went. It was quick and easy. First sew the side seams it will make a nice easy pocket to put the rod into when you fold over the top and sew the top seam. I did not do this with my first pair and had to open the fabric. So first sew the side seams then measure how large of a pocket you will need at the top to fit your curtain rod and fold over the fabric, again using the pattern as a sewing guide I needed no pins, just a quick straight stitch. I hung the rod and slid on the panels then folded where the bottom hem needed to go and again ran a straight stitch. The whole project took me less than an hour. I am off to make a second set now. Here are some photos of the project.
