Cloth Wipes

Cold and flu season are approaching and we spend so much money on toilet paper and tissues just to end up with raw scabby noses.  The solution... cloth wipes.  These inexpensive absorbent and easy to make wipes have several uses.  I first purchased a set on Ebay for myself. I have very sensitive skin and terry cloth makes my skin red and irritated I can not use any loofa type scrubbers or I become red and lotion will sting when I put it on. So I purchased some cute pink girly ones for myself.  When I came down with a cold I used them as tissue to avoid the raw red scabby nose that usually accompanies my colds. My son who was developing a cold and daughter wanted to use my soft wipes of course leaving me with none.  I had some spiderman flannel and decided to make some boy theme wipes for my son. They were fast and easy to make. They can be used as baby wipes, dampened with saline in a spray bottle on one side to clean then fold the damp side together and dry skin with the dry side. No chemicals or burning alcohol. I will also be making some from some other random flannel scraps to keep in my car. The one place that I never seem to have a napkin when I need it.  They become softer and more absorbent after a few washes.  If you make them a bit larger you can use them as burp clothes or as cloth napkins for your table. We are trying to lessen our usage of paper products opting instead for cloth items.

For wipes, lay two layers of fabric wrong side together on a self healing mat and use a rotary cutter to cut rectangles that are 8 inches by 5 inches.  This is the size I prefer but you can make what ever size you want and custom make them to fit in a wipe container you already have.  For Burp Cloths I use a dish cloth as my guide for size, again lay out the flannel wrong sides together right sides facing out and use a rotary cutter. I cut 8 of the wipes out in less than 10 minutes.  I have a basic sewing machine so no serger overlock for the professional looking edge, just a good old zig zag reinforced with a straight stitch.  I put a zig zag stitch close to the edge and went all the way around, then switched to a straight stitch and ran it down the middle of the zig zag to reinforce the stitching.  My son actually wants to get a cold so he can use them.  My daughter has taken mine and told me she will give them back when I find her some hello kitty flannel and make her a set of her own.

Here are the finished cloth boogie wipes:

I wanted to also show you how I organize my threads. I use a desk for my sewing table and found a great drawer organizer that holds threads perfectly along with other notions. I also love my tidy crafts bobbin organizer which fits perfectly along side my drawer organizer.  It makes it easy to see if I have a bobbin for the thread I want to use.
