I have started home schooling. I turned in my first self written curriculum plan on Friday. It was approved and I am going to share it with you.


Basic Home Economics

Concept 1: Cooking and Baking

Exploring the food groups
Planning a balanced meal
Food Safety
Basic Utensils and Kitchen Appliances (an overview)
Measurements and Substitutions
Food Preparation Basics ie.. chopping vs mincing, saute vs fry, grilling, baking etc.

Concept demonstration: Planning and cooking a day of balanced meals including Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, 2 Snacks and Dessert. Student will submit a written meal plan, recipes and shopping list. Student prepare all meals with oral presentation and will photograph all completed dishes for documentation.


Concept 2 Needle Work

Hand Sewing: Treads and needles, buttons, mending, embroidery.
Machine Sewing: Sewing Machine Basics: Threading, making bobbins, adjusting tension, basic sewing machine accessories and basic sewing stitches.

Knitting: Understanding Needle Size, Understanding Yarn Types, Basic Stitches. Student will visit a needle craft store and learn hands on.

Concept Demonstration: Student will demonstrate a knowledge between hand sewing thread and machine sewing thread. Student will mend a personal item of clothing that requires hand sewing. Student will sew on a button by hand. Student will produce a small example of basic embroidery stitches on a finished piece. Student will make a bobbin and properly thread a sewing machine. Student will produce an example of 6 stitches and give a verbal explanation of use for that type of stitch. Student will complete a basic machine stitched sewing project. Student will select a small knit project such as a hot pad, dish cloth, or scarf that will demonstrate her knowledge of casting on, pearl, knit and casting off.

Concept 3 Household Organization

Emergency Food and Pantry Storage Basics: What and how to store the basics for an emergency.
Understanding over the counter medications: Dosages, measurements, label reading
Storage and Space Planning: Making the most of storage space
Daily Schedules of a family

Concept Demonstration: Student will provide a diagram of a pantry stocked with 3 days of emergency food and supplies, notating any special care needed for any of the stored items. Student will make a spread sheet of the basic over the counter medication in the house including dosage information for each family member. Student will help to plan and organize the garage storage space in the home with a written plan then by implementing the plan. Student will chart a week of daily activities for the family and will be responsible for scheduling appointments and reminding family members of appointments.


Concept 3 Basic Home Maintenance

Introduction to hand tools and power tools and the safe usage of them.
Repairing holes and dings in walls
Painting preparation, tools, techniques and safe disposal of paint.
Plumbing Basics: how to unclog a sink, toilet or tub
Electrical Basics: Circuit Breakers, testing for current, changing outlets. Professional electrician demonstration.
Care and cleaning of carpet and wood flooring.

Concept Demonstration: Student will explain basic hand tools and power tools and demonstrate the safe usage of and types of screw drivers, hammers, sockets, wrenches and pliers. Student will demonstrate the safe usage of power saws, drill and sander. Student will demonstrate how to unclog a sink, toilet and tub using a plunger and by removing the removable parts to clear the drain. Student will safely replace an electrical outlet with supervision from an licensed electrician. Student will perform spot stain removal and demonstrate a verbal knowledge of wood floor care. Student will build a small project using hand and power tools.
